Lauren Kirkham ’14, admissions representative, studied business administration with a concentration in marketing at The University of Olivet before returning to serve in the Office of Admissions. As a non-traditional college student, Lauren was inspired by her incredible experience at OC to serve other young men and women who come from all backgrounds. Now three years later, she has helped numerous students pursue their dreams by becoming Comets themselves. Lauren covers Ionia, Clinton, Barry, Eaton, Ingham, Livingston, and Calhoun counties – connect with her today.
Why do you love working at OC?
I love working at OC because not only do I get to work with great students, but I get to work with a team that feels more like family. I especially enjoy working with students who are unsure about their future and helping them understand that a college degree is attainable, something I once went through myself.
Where does your passion for higher education stem from?
My passion for higher education comes from helping students discover their passions. It is so rewarding to help a student realize his or her dreams and then help them make that happen. There is a sense of fulfillment that comes along with doing your best to help those around you.
Why would you encourage high school students to attend OC?
I encourage students to attend OC because the opportunities are endless here! I think it is important to recognize individual strengths and weaknesses. At The University of Olivet, you are continuously challenged – complacency is not an option. I also believe in the art of doing good, and I love that we offer our students the opportunity to volunteer and get involved.
What do you look forward to in your role?
I look forward to Move-In Day every year! It is a crazy and busy day, but it is the best feeling to help students move into their new home away from home! The Class of 2022 already includes some amazing future Comets, and I can’t wait to help introduce even more students to the opportunities awaiting them at OC.
What is the number one piece of advice you share with students?
I tell all the students I work with to self-advocate, check their emails daily, and always try to laugh! At The University of Olivet, staff and faculty members are always willing to help, you just have to ask. While checking your email can be a pesky task, it’s a great way to communicate and stay connected with your professors and classmates. Life is simply more fun if you are laughing – there is joy in life hidden all around us, you just have to look.
What is an interesting or little known fact about yourself?
One of my goals in 2018 is to master a handstand. I am slowly, very slowly, getting there. I would recommend yoga to everyone, and OC even offers it as a class!
