Ikaika Binkowski serves as an admissions representative at The University of Olivet. He places a strong value on higher education, noting it has the power to help any person from any background unlock a brighter future. Ikaika also closely resonates with The University of Olivet’s mission to provide an education to all regardless of race, gender or financial means. He serves students in the Michigan counties of Allegan, Berrien, Cass, Kalamazoo, Kent, Muskegon, Ottawa, St. Joseph and Van Buren, and the Illinois counties of Cook, DuPage, Lake and Will.
Where does your passion for admissions stem from?
My passion for admissions stems from two things: a love for communication and passion for helping people. Communication is vitally important in all aspects of life. It builds relationships, creates opportunities and propels ideas and innovation forward. Talking to students, parents and others who I meet during my daily journey not only allows me to procure knowledge, but it also gives me the chance to instill words that have helped me along in life, with the hope of changing others’ perspectives and mindsets.
The second piece to this answer, a passion for helping people, stems from desire to make a mark on the world. During my life, whether it be through community work in my fraternity, organizational activities in clubs and sports, or my teaching stint in China, I have developed a passion for helping those in need.
Why do you encourage students to attend OC?
The college experience is an important one. It is during college that any student can reinvent themselves, gaining knowledge, skillsets and, in the end, a career pathway to embark on. The University of Olivet is an institution that promotes a value not found everywhere. A place in which you can not only gain the collegiate experience, but where you can become a better you. Through the dedicated faculty and school pride, Olivet is overflowing with quality aspects. In addition, the campus is truly beautiful, producing a quaint, home-felt feeling anyone would enjoy.
What is a quote or piece of advice you’d like to share with students?
You should enjoy the little detours to the fullest. Because that’s where you’ll find the things more important than what you want.
What is an interesting or little-known fact about yourself?
Some of my favorite songs are “Cat’s in the Cradle” by Cat Stevens and “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” by Ottis Redding. Both classics, as well as being quite meaningful. If you haven’t listened to one of them, make sure you spend a moment and check them out. You won’t be disappointed.
