Meet Diane Kirkham, OC’s very own internship coordinator. In her role, Diane helps students define and pursue their career ambitions. Her ultimate goal, of course, is to find an internship that allows the student to earn practical, real world experience in his or her field of study.
WHY DO YOU WORK AT OC?
I love working at The University of Olivet because I can help our students every day. Many students don’t realize that they need to start researching and exploring careers early and often. I can help with resources and teach the skills that will help them move closer to their chosen career every semester if they utilize the services that are available to them.
WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?
My role at OC gives me such a great opportunity to really get to know the students who meet with me, and to help them. I have many wonderful stories about students who have done great internships that have been life changing for them. They discover so much about themselves and their chosen career through internships, so it is something every student should do at least once during their time at The University of Olivet.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE STUDENTS?
I want students to know that attending OC means they will belong to a community – a community that cares about assisting them in their success. The opportunities to get involved give students the ability to develop leadership skills and a global perspective through service learning.
The number one piece of advice I would share with a student is to take advantage of resources that are available at The University of Olivet. We are here to help you be successful, so make appointments with your professors and visit them during their office hours, and take advantage of the peer tutoring that is available to you. Start with the end in mind, so work on career goals from your very first semester. You are investing a lot of your time and resources in your education, get as much out of it as you possibly can!
