Growing up in Charlotte, Michigan, Israel “Izzy” Wagner never imagined he’d attend The University of Olivet—let alone become one of its standout student leaders. But when he learned about UOlivet’s nationally recognized Insurance and Risk Management program during his senior year of high school, everything changed.
“I heard about the insurance program and decided to come here for the convenience of how close it was and the ability to get a degree that matters in the industry,” Izzy shared.
That decision opened more than just academic doors—it launched a journey of leadership, involvement and personal growth.
Beyond the Football Field
Izzy started his UOlivet experience as a football player, but his impact quickly expanded athletics. His involvement in Gamma Iota Sigma, Residence Life, the Comet Activities Board, and the President’s Leadership Institute shaped him into a leader determined to make a difference.
As an apartment manager in Residence Life, Izzy found a unique opportunity to connect with students and foster a sense of community. “This has allowed me in my last couple of years to reach students, create programs and be a leader in a different setting,” he explained.
Through the President’s Leadership Institute, Izzy has been part of an initiative to improve student-athlete experiences. “My group is coming up with a way to improve life for student-athletes and provide healthier and more efficient options on campus,” he explained.
Perhaps his most rewarding experience has been his work with Gamma Iota Sigma, including helping to endow a scholarship for future students. “Watching some of the projects our chapter has done has been awesome, highlighted by us raising $20,000 to go toward an endowed scholarship for future African American students at UOlivet.”
Building a Career on Helping Others
Izzy’s passion for insurance and risk management isn’t just about a career—it’s about helping people when they need it most.
“Insurance has the unique ability to help people in a time of crisis. When processing claims for example, as an adjuster, you are one of the first people contacted in a time of need. You can help guide people,” he explained.
UOlivet’s hands-on learning approach prepared him for success. “UOlivet does a very good job at preparing us for the future if you get involved, connecting with professionals, going to job fairs and filling out your resume throughout your time here,” he emphasized.
Advice for Future Comets
Looking back, Izzy credits mentors like former UOlivet Professor Tom Humphreys for encouraging him to step outside his comfort zone. “Tom was a catalyst in the projection of my career and pushed me outside of my comfort zone, he prompted me to get involved early on and directed me down a successful path.”
His advice to incoming students is two words: “Get Involved!”
“It is easy to think that just going to school and playing a sport should be enough but contributing to those around you is rewarding,” Izzy shared.
“Four years seems forever, and the first semester can be overwhelming but as long as you approach it one day at a time you’ll get to exactly where you want to be,” Izzy added.
As Izzy Wagner prepares to graduate from The University of Olivet, his story serves as a testament to the power of stepping up, giving back and embracing every opportunity. What started as a practical choice became a transformative journey—one that will continue to inspire future Comets for years to come.
