During the fall 2020 semester, The University of Olivet’s acapella group, Cappella Comets, was founded. Sophomore Sarah Cook, president of the Cappella Comets said, “My friend and I thought it would be fun to start our own choir at the school for students who love to sing but don’t have time to join choir and don’t enjoy typical choral music.”

While the group enjoys making music for fun, they also strive to grow new skills. “We try to encourage higher musical education by introducing different levels of music to the group and working together to figure out notes, rhythms and musicality of the songs. We hope to grow even more in the next few years and to start holding our own performances and events for the entertainment of everyone on campus,” Sarah said.

Vice president of the Cappella Comets, Eli McIntosh, decided to join the group because they love to sing, and it is a club on campus that everyone is able to be a part of. Eli mentioned another one of the group’s goals is to have fun and create an environment that is welcoming to all. “We encourage everyone to join Cappella and to come sing with us — we want to make music with everyone,” Eli said.

“We want students to be able to have fun with music, to get to express their love for the art, and we want this to be a way for students to connect and get involved with campus life. Cappella is a way for you to express the gift and enjoyment of music with everyone, and it is a way for you to have fun, make new friends, get involved on campus and share your voice with a group that has the same goals as you, which is to make music together,” Eli added.

Sarah also commented by saying, “A lot of students are worried that they are not good enough or are uncappable of performing in a choir, but Cappella Comets is accepting of everyone and often works at a slower pace for students who aren’t as experienced.”

Last semester, the Cappella Comets were able to take a big step as a group and performed at Lansing’s annual “Silver Bells” Christmas Celebration Parade. The group also made an appearance at the winter choir concert on campus where they performed alongside the Chamber Singers and Women’s Choral. Sarah said that during the spring 2022 semester, the Cappella Comets hope to start learning more advanced music, and they are also hoping to add more factors to their performances, such as choreography.

The Capella Comets meet every Wednesday in the choir room from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m. “We are always seeking new members, no audition needed. We would love to see some new faces in the group through this semester and in the next few years,” Sarah said.
