Brenda Nelson, standup comedian and presenter, will speak at The University of Olivet on Feb. 12 at 1:30 p.m. in Mott Auditorium. The presentation is part of the College’s Black History Month event series, “Celebrating African American Music as the Soundtrack of Liberation.” The event is free and open to all. Registration is not required.
Brenda Nelson
Nelson is known for her standup comedy and moving presentations about leadership, self-branding and inclusivity. Her work changes lives, allows people to discover their authentic selves and encourages others to reach their greatest potential.
Nelson was awarded the 2018 Equity and Inclusion Award from the Michigan chapter of the American College Personnel Association, the Inspirational Woman of the Year Award in the Professional Advancement category by the Michigan State University (MSU) Center for Gender in Global Context and the Jack Breslin Distinguished Staff Award in 2014 based on her commitment to excellence.
Nelson came to MSU as a first generation undergraduate student in 1975. Today, Nelson is a complex dining service manager at MSU, just one of the roles she’s held over her 45-year career at the university. She is also a dedicated community volunteer. In all her work, Nelson’s motto is “serving it with love.”
Nelson holds bachelor’s degrees in psychology and urban health and a master’s degree in higher adult lifelong education. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in higher adult lifelong education at MSU.
