Audrey Lama is a rising senior majoring in psychology and minoring in English. She’s a member of the women’s volleyball team and Psi Chi, an international psychology honor society, and she has enjoyed travel abroad opportunities and a strong network of connections at OC. This spring, Audrey was even awarded the Al and Mary Ann Gilmour Scholarship by the English program.
Hear more about Audrey’s college experience.
I graduated high school with about 75 kids, so I knew when picking a college I wanted something small. My mom was very diligent about visiting a lot of colleges; however, none felt like home until I visited OC. I visited in the fall, and anyone who has seen Olivet in the fall knows the beauty of the campus. The campus was the perfect size, and the College was also allowing me to continue playing volleyball. I also met with Dr. John Moore, assistant professor of psychology, about the psychology program. The way he talked about the program with such honor and intelligence really made me want to become a part of it.
Now as a psychology major, I hope to attend grad school after Olivet to become a school psychologist. Earlier this year I had grad school visits planned, leadership conferences to attend and some volunteer work planned; however,  since the pandemic closed down everything, I was not able to do any of this which has been a major setback. Right now, I am focused on studying for the GRE test, the graduate school entrance exam, and finding volunteer opportunities locally.
In addition, I am also an English minor. I chose this as my minor because I wanted to be proficient in writing essays for my psychology major, but this minor has done more for me than I could have imagined. It has taught me the history of the English language and culture, as well as educated me on cultural matters. It challenges me to an extreme, but I have learned more than I ever thought I would from a minor.
My relationships with all of my professors —whether in my major, minor or liberal arts classes — are more than I could have ever imagined. I can go to all of them for guidance in school, life and anything under the sun because they always have time for their students. The professors at Olivet always make time out of the classroom for me which has been very helpful for my academic success.
Outside of the classroom, I am on the volleyball team. Joining a sports team is great because it’s an automatic group of friends, with new friends joining each year. I’m also in Psi Chi, which is the international honor society for psychology. I joined Psi Chi to meet more people in my major and to gain experience in the psych field.
My experience at Olivet has truly made me a better person. I came from a very small town with little diversity; therefore, I was not exposed to what the real world was actually like. I was not being challenged to educate myself on current events, different cultures or ideas that differed from my own. Now, Olivet has opened my eyes to so much. I truly believe this is the perfect college for anyone who is looking to attend a smaller school and gain a raw college experience with a personal education.
I would encourage anyone looking for a college where they can have real friendships and an amazing learning experience to attend Olivet. The professors have made me feel so comfortable from day one. The learning experience I have had here has had such an extraordinary impact on me. The professors truly want the best for their students, and it shows in their teaching, feedback and the time they make for their students.
