Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how organizations plan, communicate and make decisions. For nonprofit leaders, however, the conversation often begins with practical questions:
Where do we start?
How do we use AI responsibly?
And how can these tools support our mission without losing the human connection that defines nonprofit work?
To help answer those questions, The University of Olivet, in collaboration with Steuben County Community Foundation, is hosting Empowered Intelligence: AI for Nonprofits Workshop Series, a six-session program designed to help nonprofit professionals, community leaders and volunteers explore practical uses of AI in nonprofit organizations.

AI for Nonprofits: Moving from Curiosity to Practical Use
Organizational and community leaders are hearing about tools like Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and other emerging AI technologies. Some people are excited. Some are cautious. Some are staying as far away as possible. Most are somewhere in the middle—curious, hopeful, and a bit overwhelmed.
Knowing what these tools are is just the beginning. Their potential for positive impact comes from knowing why and how to thoughtfully and responsibly apply AI in mission-focused work. We believe that ongoing learning is the key to successful navigation of the AI landscape from wherever a person stands. Exploring AI strategies and tools with human-centered guidance and structure can help professionals build clarity and confidence.
The Empowered Intelligence series focuses on practical, mission-centered applications of AI, including:
- Nonprofit communications and storytelling
- Grant writing and grant research
- Program planning and evaluation
- Strategic planning and organizational leadership
Participants will gain hands-on experience exploring AI tools while incorporating the ethical considerations and responsible use of AI in nonprofit settings.
“Nonprofit leaders care deeply about the communities they serve, and they want to approach new technology with both curiosity and responsibility,” said Kelly Corey, Ph.D., professor of business and Director of Graduate Business Programs. “We are recognizing, in real time, that AI isn’t just a technology conversation. It’s also a values conversation. The organizations that benefit most from AI will be the ones that approach it thoughtfully—with critical reflection, human connection and community impact at the center. That’s the spirit behind this series.”
