What is your background in graphic design?

My background in graphic design combines over 20 years of working in academics and the field. This includes several years as a graphic/web design faculty member at Lansing Community College and Kellogg Community College. My professional experience includes numerous creative roles working with several businesses, including Kellogg’s, Sparrow Health Systems and Comlink.

What do you like about teaching at Olivet?

Several things attract me to The University of Olivet, including the well-rounded curriculum that the Liberal Art Curriculum (LAC) courses provide, the small class sizes, the emphasis on advising and mentorship and the commitment of the faculty and administrators. Teaching allows me to share what I have learned about being successful in the field with others in the hope that it will make a difference in the lives of others.

What’s cool about graphic design as a career?

Probably the biggest benefit to the career path of graphic design is that there are so many occupational opportunities for students to work in the field. In addition, there are many different career paths a graduating student can follow. Graphic design also allows students to earn a living while being able to express their creativity, which for artistic students, is a really compelling reason to consider it as a career.

What do you think all students should learn before graduating? What words of wisdom do you have to share?

Beyond learning skills that will make them successful in their career path, I feel it is essential that students use their time in college to assess themselves to learn what type of occupation will provide them with the greatest reward. Too often, students jump too quickly into a major degree path and then, unfortunately, learn later that the occupation may not be what fulfills them long term. I feel it is important to search for that direction that a student is passionate about, as this will lead to the best opportunity for success and being content in a career.

What is an interesting or little-known fact about yourself?

I am a musician and enjoy writing and performing songs. I sing and play guitar with a local band, and we perform at a number of venues throughout the year. I enjoy the collaborative nature of music and find it similar in this attribute to graphic design.
