Good evening Students,

The definition of perseverance is to persist in anything undertaken; to maintain a purpose in spite of difficulty, obstacles, or discouragements; to continue steadfastly. That is also one of the attributes of an Olivetian.

Thank you for your partnership, commitment and patience as we transition to remote learning for the remainder of the semester. Remote teaching and learning is a new experience for most of us, and there will be bumps (and likely some laughs) as we adapt. Now more than ever, good communication with your professors is imperative. They understand that many of you have unique challenges at this time, and they are eager to support you.

We recognize you are faced with ongoing changes and disruptions in your personal and academic life. Trust that as we make decisions during this extraordinary time, the many challenges you are facing are taken into consideration. We are here for you!

Advising Meetings. Students are asked to meet with their faculty advisors for academic advising via Zoom meeting, telephone or email. Contact your advisor via email to set up a personal meeting. If you do not know who your advisor is, contact your IDS 499 Seminar professor for help.

Intensive Learning Term (ILT) Courses. Intensive learning term courses this year will be switched to remote learning or canceled, per faculty and administration prerogative. All travel is suspended during the ILT. If you are currently enrolled for an ILT course, please watch for an email from your professor and communicate with him/her regarding your specific questions about your course. You may drop your ILT course or ask to switch to a different ILT course at any time between now and the end of drop/add period of the ILT session, which begins on April 27.

Summer 2020 Courses. The University of Olivet summer courses will continue as planned in their usual online format. Expanded online course offerings will be available through a new partnership the College has formed with Acadeum College Consortium. Watch for more details on the expanded summer course offerings to arrive in your inbox soon.

2020-21 Course Registration. The registration period for the 2020-21 academic year has been postponed to give you more time to meet with your academic advisor. Open registration for the 2020-21 academic year will now begin on Monday, March 30, and be open for a five-week period, ending at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 4. If you have not already done so, please connect with your advisor via Zoom meeting, phone or email regarding your course selections for next year. You will receive details on how to register for classes from Registrar Leslie Sullivan. Please watch for an email from her.

Special Policies for Spring 2020

  • Change to Pass/Fail Evaluation. Students may petition to switch to pass/fail evaluation for a course if they are concerned about the negative impact of remote delivery on their performance.  A simple form is available on the opening page of myOlivet under the heading COVID-19 Academic Affairs Information. As explained on the form, certain courses that are part of a sequence of courses in which a minimum grade is required for progressing are excluded from this possibility. Students should confer with their academic advisor BEFORE submitting this form, particularly if certain courses are required for graduate school applications. Also, be sure to read page 2 of the form. The deadline to request a change to Pass/Fail evaluation is Wednesday, April 8 at 5:00 p.m.
  • Withdrawal from a Course with No Academic Penalty. Students may petition to withdraw from any course with no academic penalty through April 8.  Students who do so will receive a “W” on their transcript.  This change could affect full-time status, financial aid, and athletic eligibility.  Therefore, students should confer with their academic advisor BEFORE deciding to drop a course. The standard conditions and procedure for course withdrawal apply, and the form to request withdrawal is available on myOlivet under the heading COVID-19 Academic Affairs Information. The deadline to request withdrawal from a course with no academic penalty is Wednesday, April 8 at 5:00 p.m.

Retrieval of Personal Belongings from Campus

As you are likely aware, this morning Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a “stay-at-home” order for the entire state. We understand this order may cause increased anxiety, particularly in regards to coming to campus to retrieve your personal belongings. However, due to the Governor’s stay-at-home order we are not able to allow students to return to campus until at least April 13 (the duration of the current stay at home order). As soon as a plan for move-out is formalized by the Student Engagement Team and the stay-at-home order is lifted, you will be able to return to campus to retrieve your belongings. At this time, do not return to campus. Instead, please wait for further instructions.

Commencement. At this time, no decision has been made regarding Commencement. Our seniors are foremost in our thoughts as we grapple with the significant challenges brought on by the pandemic and the impact that the necessary changes are having on long-anticipated celebrations. Fear not! We will celebrate somehow, someway! The College will have more information to share about Commencement on or before April 8. Until then, we ask for your patience as we work through possible plans and prepare clear communications for you.

We understand that you might have questions regarding the information provided in this email. Please communicate regularly with your academic advisor and professors. It is also imperative that you continue to read all emails you receive from the College.

Be strong and know that my heart is with you. We will persevere. We are OLIVET!

Sincerely,

Provost Davis
