Good afternoon Students, I am proud of you for your flexibility, patience and perseverance over these past weeks. This continues to be an extraordinary time. As the COVID-19 situation evolves, so do our plans for the end of the school year. Our fundamental mission is to educate our students – you – and we are committed to preserving your educational access, opportunity and success, regardless of circumstances. This communication covers the following important topics:

  1. Extension of Stay-At-Home Executive Order
  2. Final Exam Schedule
  3. Residence Check Out
  4. May Celebrations Update
  5. Email Reminder

Extension of Stay-At-Home Order
On April 9, Governor Gretchen Whitmer extended and expanded Executive Order 2020-42 limiting gatherings and travel through April 30. Michigan has the third highest number of COVID-19 cases in the country. We understand the stay-at-home order has created a level of uncertainly for our students; however, the entire The University of Olivet community must do its part in helping to slow the spread of COVID-19 and save lives. The College continues to operate, and we will continue to deliver high-quality instruction and essential services. Individuals who are required to be on-site for essential work functions — including faculty and staff members deemed essential to operations, remote learning, and in support of students in residence — will still come to work if they are well. All other employees will continue to work remotely until directed to return to campus. You are important to us. Do not hesitate to email or call with any questions. We will respond to your concern and assist you in any way we can. Students are also encouraged to schedule a Zoom meeting with their advisor or a faculty member with any questions about finals or fall registration.
Final Exam Schedule Unchanged – Week of April 22 – 25
By now, each of your professors should have let you know via Blackboard what their expectation is of you for the final exam period in your class. Please remember that many classes do not have “final exams” per se. Some professors use class projects, papers, presentations or other methods to assess your learning. If they expect you to do a required class activity during your scheduled final exam time, such as a Zoom meeting, online exam or other activity, your professors will let you know via Blackboard.  As usual, the final exam schedule is available on the “Academic Calendar and Final Exam Schedule” section on the home page of my.olivetcollege.edu.
Residence Check Out – Not Permitted at this Time
Students are not permitted to travel to campus at this time to move out due to the Governor’s stay-at-home order.

  • When the Governor lifts the stay-at-home order, an email will be sent with instructions to schedule your move out.
  • As outlined in the April 2 email from the Office of the Provost, appointments will be required to move out and a specific move out process will be put into place at that time.

Thank you for understanding that we must adhere to this policy for the health and safety of you, your family and the staff of The University of Olivet. May Celebrations Planning continues for virtual events to celebrate Honors Week (May 11-15), Baccalaureate (May 15) and the graduation of our seniors (May 16). We will rise to the challenge and properly celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments of our students and graduates. With student input, the College is working enthusiastically to finalize event details, including how and when to celebrate a more traditional Commencement with our 2020 graduates at a point in the future when it is safe to do so. I will share details with you by email as soon as they are finalized.
Reminder to Read Emails
Please carefully read any emails you receive from the Office of the President and Office of the Provost. So that you may easily refer to them, all of these messages are also posted to the The University of Olivet website at www.olivetcollege.edu. Click “Read the Updates” on the banner at the top of the home page to access previous messages.
In closing, please know that you are in the hearts, minds and prayers of your The University of Olivet family. We are so proud of you — you inspire us every day! In the face of extra challenges and sometimes even loss, you are showing great determination to forge on and continue to write your life’s story. This pandemic is only one chapter in that story. Keep on writing!
Maria G. Davis, Ph.D.
Provost
