During The University of Olivet’s celebration of its 181st Founders’ Day on Feb. 19, 2025, Faith Fowler was one of three students to share their reflections on their time at The University of Olivet.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, growth is “the process of developing or maturing physically, mentally, or spiritually.” In college, growth doesn’t appear in front of you after a long day of hard work, and it can’t be identified consciously in the moment. Growth can be felt, observed, and practiced as you navigate your individual experience over a period of time. When I began my first semester here at The University of Olivet, I didn’t think I needed to grow. I was complacent with my goals, values, and relationships. In hindsight, I hadn’t realized that my growth had already begun. I knew I’d be learning with each course I took, but I had never imagined that some of the most valuable life lessons would be taught outside of the classroom.
I never had a large group of friends growing up. In fact, I was lucky to have even one that was consistent in my life. My arch nemesis in high school was the jar of popsicle sticks that my teacher held, one for each of my peers and me, with our names scrawled on at one end. I hated public speaking, despised social situations, and neglected to surround myself with support beyond my family at home.
It wasn’t until I forcibly brought myself out of my shell that I realized how fun college could truly be. I attended campus-wide events, studied in common buildings, and talked to my peers outside of class. Each scenario that I pushed myself to explore brought me the courage to continue, and after some time, those efforts paid off. I hadn’t realized it at the moment, but I had already experienced significant growth. I ended up pledging to Iota Kappa Omicron last January, where I have learned more about friendship, loyalty, and sisterhood than I thought possible.
If I hadn’t taken that leap of faith, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I can begin and hold a conversation with just about anyone, participate in class discussions, and provide advice to those who are stuck in the same spot I escaped. Experiences outside of the classroom prove to be just as valuable to our growth as students.
Stepping out of one’s comfort zone is the scariest but also the most beneficial thing a student can do. In doing so, you allow yourself to feel the world around you, gain new and exciting experiences, and navigate life as a young adult. Embracing every opportunity, change, and challenge is an essential factor in growth, which every individual in this room is capable of. A fish cannot grow larger than the bowl it is kept in. You cannot grow by confining your ambition to the corners of your mind. Ask questions, open discussions, and try new experiences that are difficult to partake in. Get out of your comfort zone!
Growth is a process, one that cannot take place without allowing yourself to begin.
