Each year, the College celebrates the achievements of students with a number of awards at Honors Convocation. This year, students and faculty members gathered via Zoom to present awards and mark the occasion.
Here is an overview of the top multicultural awards.
Multicultural Academic Achievement Award
The Multicultural Academic Achievement Award is presented annually to the top five multicultural students with the highest academic GPA of 3.7 or greater. This year’s Multicultural Academic Achievement Awards are given to Jillian Johnson, Ashton Osborne, Nhu Nguyen, Cameron Ramos and Eliza Velasquez.
Jillian Johnson, from Lansing, is a graduating senior majoring in psychology and minoring in business administration. Jillian was the president of Nu Gamma Xi, a member of Psi Chi, a graduate of the Women’s Leadership Institute and a fellow of the President’s Leadership Institute. She also served as an admissions student associate.
Ashton Osborne, from Detroit, is a graduating senior majoring in journalism and mass communication. She is a member of Alpha Lambda Epsilon, Common Ground and the Marching Comets.
Nhu Nguyen, from Lansing, is a rising senior majoring in accounting. She is a member of the Accounting Student Organization and Soronian.
Cameron Ramos, from Charlotte, is a rising junior majoring in exercise science. He is a member of PEK, an honors student and part of the basketball team.
Eliza Velasquez, from Haslett, is a rising junior majoring in visual arts with a concentration in studio art. She is a member of the Art Alliance.
Multicultural Leadership Award
The Multicultural Leadership Award is presented to a student who has shown a tireless commitment to the projects of the Office of Multicultural Education and Initiatives and students-of-color organizations. The year’s award is given to graduating senior Asheley Brooks from Detroit. She is a psychology major and a member of the cheer team. Also, Asheley was the president of the Black Student Union (BSU) and a member of the Campus Activities Board. She is a fellow of the President’s Leadership Institute and a graduate of the Women’s Leadership Institute. She also led an excursion trip of 14 BSU members to the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. In addition, Asheley led BSU in many community service projects in the local communities.
