Opening Convocation is a The University of Olivet tradition that marks the beginning of a new academic year with encouragement and inspiration from President Steven M. Corey, Ph.D., as well as several student speakers. Under the theme A Change Worth the Challenge, four students shared a challenge they’ve faced and the positive outcome they experienced because of it. In addition, each speaker shared a set of challenges they would like the audience to face, creating a better and stronger OC Nation.
In a time when it seems like unity is falling apart, I challenge us to come together. I challenge us not to see color. I challenge us to hear the story of someone who doesn’t look the way we do. I challenge us to choose LOVE over HATE, and let that decision change every one of our lives for the better.
I wrote two essays every week, between 2,000 and 4,000 words in total, and explored the ancient city. I got lost on the first day. Everything ended up fine once we figured out where I actually was and the easiest way to get to where I needed to be. And was it worth it? Absolutely!
The challenge I chose led me to the last frontier, Alaska. A place much different from what I am used to, what I am comfortable with, and who I am around. I placed myself in these circumstances in search of adventure, and I got more than I could ask for. So what change made this concept of discomfort worth it?
Olivet became my home that challenged me and made sure that I will succeed. OC is a world of knowledge and opportunity waiting to challenge you and change your life. Step out of your comfort zone and grasp the opportunities that will change your life for the better.
