The highly anticipated 2017 edition of the “Garfield Lake Review” was unveiled to OC Nation on April 7. The annual spring publication gives students an opportunity to be published and to express their creativity.
Now in its 47th edition, the “Garfield Lake Review” serves as an outlet for students of all majors, alumni, faculty and staff to share poems, fiction and non-fiction short stories, photographs and other artwork. The editorial board is comprised of students with staff and faculty advisers overseeing the publication. Submissions are reviewed through a blind screening process so that no author or artist may be judged on race, religion, gender, background, sexual orientation, political ideologies or any other class.
In 1971, the “Garfield Lake Review” began as an assignment in a creative writing class. With help from former Professor James Coleman, the “Garfield Lake Review” became an annual publication. The magazine coined its name from Garfield Lake, located about three miles from the college and a popular hangout for students throughout the years.

The 132 page publication includes 24 poems, 29 pieces of artwork, five short fiction stories, three short creative non-fiction stories, bios of each contributor and a piece on the history of The University of Olivet and the “Garfield Lake Review.”
“Having my work published in the “Garfield Lake Review” is such a great accomplishment,” said Hannah, a graphic design major. “I think it’s magnificent to be recognized for my talent on campus and being able to say I’m a published artist at such an early stage in my career is a real portfolio building tool.”
In addition to the ‘Garfield Lake Review,’ Olivet’s student media also publishes a bi-weekly newspaper and operates a radio station. Whether its writing, painting, athletics, Greek life, honor societies, academic clubs or more, the opportunities are truly endless for students at Olivet to participate in or even lead an organization that interests them!
