1. Michigan Achievement Scholarship

Michigan high school graduates automatically qualify for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, which offers between $2,000 and $5,500 per year for attending a Michigan college. You’ll get around $2,000 at a community college or up to $5,500 at a public or private university.

This broad, need-blind scholarship helps most recent Michigan graduates reduce tuition costs. Just enroll in an in-state college and complete the FAFSA.

2. Michigan’s Promise Zones Scholarships

The Michigan Promise Zones offer tuition-free scholarships in 13 communities across the state, including Detroit, Lansing, and Kalamazoo. Eligible students must live and graduate within a Promise Zone, and awards can cover up to 100% of tuition and mandatory fees — often for an associate degree and, in some areas, a bachelor’s. Find out if you live in a Promize Zone here.

3. Fostering Futures Scholarship

The Fostering Futures Scholarship is designed specifically for Michigan students who were in foster care on or after their 13th birthday. This scholarship provides about $3,000 per year to help you pursue college or career training. It can be used at either public or private nonprofit schools within the state. Apply here.

4. Detroit Economic Club Scholarship

Students from Detroit, Wayne, Oakland, or Macomb Counties can apply for the Detroit Economic Club Scholarship, which awards $2,000 to incoming freshmen and can be renewed for up to three additional years. Financial need and academics are considered in your application.

Kelsey’s Law Scholarship is open to Michigan high school students who are passionate about reducing distracted driving among teens. To apply, you’ll create a persuasive message (like a short video, graphic design, or even a tweet) that encourages young drivers to stay focused behind the wheel.

The most compelling entries can earn you anywhere from $500 up to $2,000 in scholarship money. The scholarship is named in memory of Kelsey Raffaele, a Michigan teen who tragically died in a cellphone-related crash, and it’s sponsored by a law firm and other safety advocates.

The MEA Scholarship is open to high school seniors who are dependents of MEA members or from low-income households. Awards vary but can cover a significant portion of college expenses and tuition in Michigan institutions.

Annual awards range from $2,000 up to $5,000, and notably, many of these scholarships are renewable each year as you continue your degree. MCWT also provides each scholarship winner with a professional mentor and even help finding tech internships. Check it out here.

9. Horatio Alger Michigan Scholarship

This scholarship is tailor-made for students who have overcome significant adversity and come from families with limited financial means. The Horatio Alger Scholarship is unique in that it’s looking for your personal story of perseverance: Maybe you’ve faced hardships like poverty, illness, family challenges, or other hurdles, but you still kept pushing forward and helping others.

That means if you win, you can apply to college free of financial worry because tuition, fees, room and board, books, and more are paid for in full. To be eligible for application, you need to be a high school senior who is Pell Grant-eligible (lower-income), a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and a member of certain underserved groups (African American, Hispanic American, Asian/Pacific Islander American, or Native American).
